Request for Support: Back-to-School Backpacks for Children and Youth with Special Needs

As a new school year approaches, many families are preparing for the excitement of returning to the classroom. For families of children and youth with special needs, however, back-to-school can also bring significant financial and emotional challenges.

In partnership with Suncor, the Autism Society of the RMWB is proud to launch our Sensory Back-to-School Backpack Initiative.

This initiative is designed to help ensure children and youth with special needs begin the school year with the tools they need to succeed. Approximately 90 backpacks will be available, each thoughtfully filled with core school supplies, sensory supports, and self-regulation items to help students feel prepared, confident, and ready to learn.

Together, we are working to reduce barriers, support families, and promote inclusive learning environments where every child has the opportunity to thrive.

Registration is open now! The last day to register is August 7, or until all backpacks have been spoken for, whichever comes first. We will do our best to match requests. If you are Fort McMurray residents Aug 27th and 28th are the pick up days. Rural residents we will arrange drop off days Aug 31st through to Sept 4th.

Autism and Neurodiversity Awareness Training

This is a two-hour training session facilitated by the Autism Society of the RMWB. During this two-hour session, you will learn how to support individuals of all ages living with disabilities throughout their lives. Training is appropriate for caregivers, professionals, family, friends, employers and coworkers, and anyone who supports someone living with a disability or wants to expand their knowledge of neurodiverse individuals. This training will offer a certification upon completion.

Enjoy a 2-hour sensory-friendly experience at Awesome Khaos with full access to all play areas. Please bring grippy socks or purchase a pair, and the restaurant will be open for purchase of food and drinks. Families and siblings are welcome, and adults must stay in the facility throughout the event.
